LG 60PS60 60-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV

THX display certification sets this series apart. 60" PDP 1080P HDTV, 1920 x 1080 Resolution, THX Display Certified, 600Hz Sub Field Driving, 2,000,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio, 1,500 cd/m2 Brightness, ATSC/NTSC/Clear QAM - 1 Tuner, Dual XD Engine, SRS TruSurround XT, 4 HDMI input

I will start out saying this is an excellent tv for the price! If you are like me you have probley read tons of reviews, shopped around, looked at the sets in the stores and so on. I was able to get lucky enough to view the TV's I was considering on to purchase at the local Sears side by side. The sets were the LG60PS60, Panny TC58S1, Panny V10 & Samsung PN58B650. To be honest they all looked good! The major deal breaker was the price point, the LG is around 200 to 300 dollars cheaper than the Samsung PN58B650 and about k less than the Panny V10(... on line that is). I eliminated the TC58S1 from my choice since I dont think it was in the same class as the other three. The Samsung B650 & Panny V10 did have deeper blacks I agree but for the price differance not an issue at all. The stand comes mounted on this tv in which isnt to bad but if you have little ones I would recomend mounting it on the wall... never know with little hands ( get a good mount thou, the tv weighs around 125lbs or so). Hands down the set is better looking the the other's I have mentioned, it looks like a big picture frame with the solid sheet of glass that covers the front, not to mention makes it easier to clean in the future.

They say you dont have to break in the tv but I did anyhow. I found a free download to burn on a dvd disc that runs thru radom colors, I used it when I was not watching tv prior to 100hrs. By no means is the TV picture that good right out of the box, its not bad but given time (over 100hrs) and use the "wizzard" that it has its to bad at all. I did use a dvd calabration disc that I had borrowed from a friend DVE ( long story short, it takes some time to play with it) but when I was able to "dial" it in, WOW!

The sound isnt to bad, I was actually impressed with it since its from a TV but never the less I use a surround sound set up so its not an issue for me. Face it, most tv's are not good for quality sound. The connections are pretty good, it has all that you will need for a good set-up. Quick note, the photo that shows the back panel is NOT correct. The connections such as HDMI and so on are the lower right hand (if viewing from the back) and not in the middle as shown above. Not a big issue unless you are mounting this on the wall and using cables thru the wall as I did, so plan ahead.

There is only one issue I have with this set thou, its the reflection is gives out. Now I knew this prior to purchase so I cant complain about it, its "glass"! I just thought I would warn those who may not think about it. We have an open living room with large windows on one side and an open kitchen in the back that when the lights are on you can see the reflection. This is not a "knock" on the set since most plasmas will have glare not to mention anything with glass such as the new lcd/led's.

Image retention is not an issuse with this set ( at least not this one), I have the orbiter set on to take care of that. If you do have an issue thier is a white wash along with a color watch, I found that to be very helpful if needed. As I had mentioned earlier the picture wizzard isnt to bad, it does a fairly good job but to get the full beauty you should think about getting it calabrated with a DVD, it really help's! With that I dont think its ness. to spend 0 to get if done by a professional but thats just my opinion thou. Just be patiant with it, give it least 100 to 200 hours then you be amazed.

I have the LG BD390 Blu-ray player so I did not need to 60ps80 series to stream netflix ( great player by the way!) The image is fantastic, I could not be happier. Standard tv is so/so, I believe any set its going to look so/so but standard HD channels (720p broadcast) look's very good! I had a Samsung 56' DLP that this set replaced that I thought it was very good but after getting this... hands down this set overwhelms it!

My final over-view:
I feel that I have chosen the right TV. The size, the price & the picture... I am quite pleased with this TV. I have never owned a plasma tv let alone a LG TV since most of them have been Samsung ( which is a great TV as well) but now I can say I am a LG fan as well. Just a fact, side by side the Samsung B650 & Panny V10 may have a little bit better blacks but in your home you cant tell the differnace. When I say "balcks" I mean more of a balance, I do believe the LG has better color thou. I would have to say the Panny V10 was very good but for k more no way. I gave this set a 5 star due to the size, picture and price. I didnt want to spend more than k for a set since that was my budget but I also wanted a great tv, so in essance I found both! Maybe this little review may help then again maybe not but I thought I would put my 2 cents worth in.

Samsung UN55B7000 55-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LED HDTV

Samsung ultra-slim LED TVs combine breakthrough picture quality, eco-friendly design and advanced connectivity options that will keep you entertained 24/7. It boasts Internet TV that allows you to receive content via Yahoo!, Flickr, and other online TV widgets on screen. USB 2.0 movie: multi-media center makes it easy to watch movies, browse photos and listen to music on your TV. The Samsung UN55B7000 LED HDTV also makes it easy to be green with up to 40% less power consumption than conventional LCDs.

Many folks still wonder about the newer LED/LCD vs. Plasma.
I was one of them. After months of research, I picked the 58" B650 Plasma.
It is always tough to audition in a store, but we felt it beat out the big LCD's.
Well - read on.
Had it 3 weeks, waiting for it to 'break in', which it did (the phosphors have to age and become uniform - took about 50 hours of viewing to achieve.)
Was able over time to get a great pic (in dynamic mode), but it never quite
looked as great as our Samsung 40" B630 upstairs.
Then I measured the power consumption after we noticed the heat coming off the screen. Uh - 550W average, with peaks up to 700W in certain brght movie scenes!
My wife and I play the set quite a bit, and some quick math told us the heat and cost was just too much a price to pay for something that will hang on the wall for years to come. Back to the stores for more auditioning.

After another few weeks of looking we bought the 55" UN55B7000 LED/LCD.
Almost the same size - but 1/4 the power after reading up on it.
Out of the box, this set looked as good or better than the plasma.
Black levels as good - color balance even better - My test BluRay that has a number of tough to get right grey/black scenes is Terminator Salvation. Looked better on the 7000.I use that, and UP, which really tests the color saturation.
And this is in the default movie mode, which comes up when I use my Samsung BluRay player.
With minimal tweaking in Standard Mode, I got it looking even better.
No heat. Long term cost way down over the plasma.

SUMMARY - I was able to own both in my own home and do my own tweaking and comparing, and all things considered - The LED/LCD 7000 beat out the 58B650 plasma.
Hope this provides some input for others that are trying to decide.
Consider all the factors - the heat and power as well as the picture.

Sony BRAVIA Z Series KDL-46Z5100 46-Inch 1080p 240Hz LCD HDTV

Enjoy the latest in HDTV performance with the Sony BRAVIA Z-Series, featuring Motionflow 240Hz technology for maximum motion detail and clarity, plus broadband internet connectivity with built-in BRAVIA Internet Video capabilities, that let you view select on-demand movies and TV shows and listen to music and more, and even lets you personalize your entertainment experience by selecting and positioning widgets containing the latest news, weather, sports and more directly on your TV screen.

Go for the Sony BRAVIA XBR Series KDL-46XBR9 46-Inch 1080p 240Hz LCD HDTV, Black - I wish I would have. The price difference is negligible now compared to when I purchased my 46Z. With the XBR9 you get better built in sound, better backlight technology, and the speakers are hidden - taking an inch of the height of the bezel/TV. Not to mention you might be less likely to get the flashlight effect and uneven backlight that I did.

Luckily in this case I didn't purchase from Amazon; (1) I had a special deal and (2)having to return 2 units to - you know who: 'blue' - was a hassle but getting three shipped from Amazon would have been more frustrating.

So here is my review for the 46" Z - the third one I tried.

The Bravia LCD TV Z series are far superior to others in similar class and price range. Sony has provided some fantastic features in this model; in fact, most of the specs are identical to the XBR9s!

With the Bravia Engine 3 processor and Motionflow 240Hz refresh rate, fast panning and action scenes are rendered smooth and clean. The exceptional contrast ratio and real time enhancer provide detail in the darkest shadows and deep blacks that rival plasma screens. Coupled with the ambient light sensor which automatically adjusts the contrast and brightness levels to deliver a great picture in any lighting.

The award-winning XROSS media bar is the easiest, most user-friendly menu navigation available on any TV. For a unit with so many features the XROSS is essential for finding content and configurations with ease. If you have ever used a PS3, the Bravia menus will be very familiar to you, If not, you needn't worry about navigating the TVs functions as XROSS is very intuitive and easy to master.

Sony's Bravia link makes one button viewing a reality (when using compatible Sony components); want to watch a DVD or Blu-Ray? Just insert the disc in a Sony player and the TV as well as A/V receiver will power on, tune to the correct input, and adjust the audio and screen settings for optimal movie viewing.

The included remote will automatically and seamlessly control all of your Bravia Link devices (Blu-Ray, DVD, Home theater surround, PS3, HD radio, and A/V receiver)

The Bravia's ethernet port is your doorway to unlimited entertainment and painless firmware updates. Provided with the Sony W, Z and XBR series is access to free and subscription based streaming content not available on other TVs.
-Free, [...] streaming radio without interruptions.
-Exclusive free Sony content including trailers, videos and music - currently featuring a collection of full length, high quality, classic music videos by Michael Jackson.
-Amazon video on demand service in HD. IMO much better than pay-per-view.
-Netflix streaming HD video- although doesn't currently support search and is limited to your "watch Instantly" queue.
-Youtube, eHow.com, epicurious.com, and several other built in widgets to access online content and rss feeds.

I have always been a Sony devotee, so I am a bit biased and stuck with this model (2 exchanges to get a defect free screen) when most buyers would have changed brands.

I must admit that I was rather particular in my expectations for the video quality. Most people would not even notice what I called defects in this model - I am a photographer and graphic designer so I have a trained eye for visual appearance and very picky about how a display performs. The actual problem that I encountered has been documented in several Sony and Samsung models but is common to all LCD screens as far as I can tell.

I spent a lot of time and energy unpacking, mounting, configuring, tweaking, contacting Sony support and ultimately repackaging 2 units for return/exchange. I guess the adage, third times' a charm applied in my case.

Sharp Aquos LC42D65U 42-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV

The AQUOS LC42D65U sets a new standard for large-screen flat panel TVs. With Full HD 1080p resolution and an elegant new design, it produces a breathtaking picture quality that is second to none. The LC42D65U utilizes Sharp's proprietary Advanced Super View/Black TFT Panel with Spectral Contrast Engine, providing high Dynamic Contrast Ratio, 6ms response time and wide viewing angles (176H x 176V). The LC42D65U is HDTV with built-in ATSC / QAM / NTSC tuners and include 5 HDMI inputs, compatible with 1080p signals, and 2 HD 1080p component video inputs. The LC42D65U features a sleek piano black cabinet with subtle recessed bottom-mounted speakers. The included table stand easily removes for wall mounting applications.

Very happy with this purchase. Got it from Amazon for 850.00 shipped no tax, so cant complain about that! 5 hdmi inputs plus pc inputs makes this a very scaleable tv. People complain about pixels up close. Yes you will see some blocks up close (1 or 2 feet away) but from my sitting distance of 8 - 14 feet, the screen is crystal clear. HD looks amazing of course. Xbox360 in 1080 is fantastic. Speakers are garbage though, but you should expect that on any LCD or Plasma, unless you are dropping 1500.00 +. A word about LCD vs. Plasma. There are valid arguments for and against both technologies. For me it came down to 1 simple thing. Plasma generates heat, and heat and electronics dont mix!

Panasonic VIERA S1 Series TC-P54S1 54-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV, Black

54" Plasma, 1080p, NEO PDP Panel which is brighter, Full-time 1080p TV lines of moving picture resolution, 3 HDMI, Native contrast ratio 40,000:1, Dynamic contrast infinite black 2,000,000:1, Game Mode, Anti Reflective Filter, 600 Hz Subfield Drive

Purchased this TV just before Thanksgiving (from Sears) for just about 1100 + tax. An excellent, excellent buy. After doing all the research comparing LCD and Plasma features the only worry I had was maybe glare from my windows (since I have one right behind me when I face the TV). I am glad to say that except on really bright days it is hardly noticeable - on those days I need to turn my blinds down.

The picture is really outstanding (watching HD on comcast) and with surround sound on my home theater, movies are a completely different experience now. Watching sports is another experience which is completely different with HD. It has sufficient number of ports for HDMI and component connections, and those are conveniently near one side at the rear. Controls are also on the side, except for the power button in front.

If you are planning to buy, I would definitely recommend it - good value for money. The only potential downsides are (1) no internet connectivity (2) the SD card slot is quite slow reading pictures (3) the glass is apt to pick up fingerprints and smudges, and the bezel picks up dust really quick too (4) consumes more power than comparable LCD tvs.

Has a good picture and more features then anything I was able to find at any price, and this was just a little over 200 bucks.First of all the 2 things that is not at par for me is that its so new my cable remote don't have the code for it so I have to use the remote that came with it for volume. Plus the remote don't work unless your under 10 feet from the set.
I have it in my garage so the dvd works great for plans that I buy on dvd and the usb slot is great for pictures or other info as is the camera card slot. If your gonna put it on the wall as I did don't forget the wall mount that they suggest with it, () you can't get one any cheaper. Beleive me I tryed, not even wal-mart.........If I get 5 years out of it I figure I got my $$$$$$ worth.

Samsung PN42B450 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV

42.3" screen (measured diagonally) * 1024 x 768 pixels * 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio * 600Hz Subfield Motion anti-blur technology * FilterBright anti-glare filter *

I have owned this television for about 3 weeks now; It is amazing. Don't worry about it only being 720p ... anything sized between 0"-42" raster the 720p perfectly, and 46"-63" (or above) I would recommend 1080p. Black levels are amazing, even with the dedicated chip disabled (for the break in period). I want to address a few concerns most people have:

Q. Do plasmas get hot?
A. They do get warm, but compared to a similarly equipped LCD TV, you are talking maybe one degree warmer of ambient temperature. I will say, the larger the plasma, the warmer it will get (and the increase is not proportional so do your homework behind that particular model).

Q. What about burn in?
A. Most plasma models include a pixel shifting protocol that protects the television from burn-in so that's not a concern. All plasma's have the possibility of exhibiting image retention (IR), which is a temporary ingrained image that goes away (could take between 1 hr - 3 weeks). If you adjust your television to lower brightness, contrast and standard picture mode (off of dynamic) for the first 120 hrs (break-in period) you should be fine. It is usually the first 120 hrs that you need to be slightly careful. NOTE: I personally have had absolutely zero IR cases thus far.

Hands down, this television is a great size, for a wonderful price and I would fully endorse getting it if it is one of your considerations. I originally planned on purchasing a PN50B650, but at this time the cost of the PN42B450 and size were a better fit for me.

Cheers!
